ASTRONAUTS are being frozen in time in sleeper pods so they can endure long space journeys to far away destinations.
The new pods will see space travellers hibernate, bringing science fiction movies such as Interstellar and the recent Passengers movie, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, to reality.
As humanity gears up to colonise other planets the sleeper pods will help with the extremely long journeys.
Mars, which is the closest planet to Earth and the top of the interplanetary travel destinations, will take six months to travel to with current technology.
Pluto, on the edge of the solar system, took nine and a half years to reach in the fastest, unmanned, spacecraft.
By lowering the average body temperature (37 degrees celsius) to around 32 degrees celsius, the heart rate and blood pressure are also lowered, inducing a state of sleep.
Medical professionals already use the tactic to treat sufferers of cardiac arrest and heart failure so that they have more time to asses the damage.

The patients usually stay in a comatose state for up to four days, but Spaceworks – the firm developing the pods using a method it calls “therapeutic hypothermia” – believes that it could make the state last for months.
John A. Bradford, president of Spaceworks, told Quartz: “Our goal is to get from days and weeks to months.”
Describing the pods, he said: “There would be some robotic arms and monitoring systems taking care of [the passengers].
“They’d have small transnasal tubes for the cooling and some warming systems as well, to bring them back from stasis.”
Spaceworks says that it will begin testing the pods on animals as early as next year with human testing to follow in space and aboard the International Space Station.
ALIEN investigators claim this giant hand is REAL and could have come from a dead extra terrestrial being.
Brien Foerster, of Hidden Inca Tours, and his team claim to have been given the three-fingered specimen by a group of cagers who were exploring desert tunnels in southeastern Peru.
The explorers said it was found near a strange elongated humanoid skull that was also given over.
There have been instant claims that the items are hoaxed, particularly as the group would not give exact details about the location of the finds.
But, Mr Foerster, who obtains an unusually high amount of mysterious specimens, which it is claimed could originate from aliens, believes it is a genuine sample.
Mr Foerster said he examined the hand in Cusco, Peru, and that he thought it came from a real creature.
He says X-rays were taken of the objects, which showed the fingers on the hand each had six bones, instead of the three in a human finger.
Unnamed physicians said the hand and skull were "biological objects", with "real animal bone and skin tissues", he claimed.
They also concluded the hand was not human or from any known animal on Earth, it is alleged.
He said: "It was X-rayed and examined by physicians here in Cusco who stated that it clearly was not a human, but was a life form of some kind.”
Mr Foerster's group said radiocarbon and DNA testing of the objects are now planned.
Scott C Waring, an unconnected alien hunter based in Taiwan, discussed the allegations on his website ufosightingsdaily.com.
He said: "DNA results will only say the DNA doesn’t match any known species.

“Sure there is a skull, but it looks to be the size of an infant, if it is the same species as the hand.”
He believes aliens exist on Earth and speculated over the finds.
He added: “Several different kinds of aliens may have been working together and died in the Cusco cave tunnel where it was found.”
But there have been mixed reactions to the suggestions.
One YouTube viewer said: “Truly amazing. It makes you question the whole idea of life and how it evolved.”
Others called "hoax."
Another viewer of a video about the claims said: “Maybe someone attached human fingers on top of a fin.”
Some ridiculed the claims of real scientists being involved.
The small skull also allegedly found in the cave in Peru.
One posted: “Yeah, lets examine this interesting piece of alien evidence in the middle of my kitchen without any kind of environmental contamination measures or proper tools, just bare handed.
“But, oh, but don’t forget the gloves and coat, we are scientists.”
In November, Mr Foerster said in a video on his website tests were being carried out on the bizarre skull-like object, but this is the first mention of the hand.
At the time the skull was said to be found with a small allegedly mummified humanoid-like body and sent for DNA tests - but so far no results have been released.
Mr Foerster has come under much scrutiny from sceptics in the past.
He was involved in DNA tests, which allegedly confirmed the 3,000-year old Paracas elongated skulls did not have human DNA.

But, he has been reluctant to release details of who carried out the tests.
The Paracas skulls have long been held up by UFO hunters as evidence of ancient alien visitations due to their extraordinarily huge foreheads.
They were discovered on the desert peninsula of Paracas, on the southern coast of Peru, by native archaeologist Julio Tello in 1928.
Scientists say it was the most extreme example of skull elongation, a deformation practice carried out by several ancient cultures by binding infants heads through pieces of wood, ever found.
Sceptics were not convinced by the "genetic research" news of which was released via social media rather than through a scientific journal as is the norm.
Some even concluded the research findings were just an elaborate hoax.
Suspicions were also raised when the identities of the scientists involved were not released.
Research by sceptics later uncovered that those involved had a history of involvement and belief in research into paranormal subjects such as the Yeti and so-called alien hybrids, an alleged cross breed between humans and aliens.

They also questioned Mr Foerster's impartiality in commissioning the research as the museum is a private, not state venture, he runs tours specialising in pseudo-archaeology and has released a pseudo science book about the skulls.
Earlier last year, Mr Foerster claimed to have found an unusual winged small humanoid corpse in a specimen jar in an office in Mexico.
Claims were made in a video clip online that X-rays carried out on the "dead body" have shown a skeletal structure inside, leading to calls for further analysis, including DNA tests.
But there have been arguments the clip entitled "What is this weird creature with wings in this jar?" could be an online money spinner, because the clip promotes a website where viewers have to pay to see the full documentary.

A "SARCOPGAGUS-like" object and Eye of Horus-style "carving" have allegedly been found in NASA images taken on Mars.
NOT A SARCOPHAGUS
The far-fetched claims are made by a notorious alien hunter in a series of blogs.
Scott C Waring wrote on website ufosightingsdfaily.com that his discovery of the Eye of Horus "carved into a rock" on the Red Planet was "absolute proof of life".
He said: "This is the Eye of Horus on Mars. The writing is clear, if you seen enough Egyptian hieroglyphs, you will know right off, this is a type of writing through drawings.
"I don't imagine much will ever come of it, since few if any Egyptian archaeologists will ever see these photos.
"Each line has distinct meaning and purpose behind it. This is 100 percent evidence that intelligent life did once exist on the surface of Mars.
"If life still exists, it would have to live below the surface, because daily life above the surface would be extremely hard, but not impossible."
The Eye of Horus is an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection, royal power and good health, which often appeared in hieroglyphs.
Here we go again
There is a widespread theory among some alien believers Mars once had life that flourished just like on Earth, with ancient civilisations to rival our own, but that it was killed off by a catastrophic nuclear war.
It ties in with the ancient aliens theory that our own civilisations like the ancient Egyptians were visited by advanced aliens from outer space thousands of years ago who helped them build remarkable monuments like the pyramids.
The images Mr Waring scours through are taken by the NASA Curiosity rover droid which roams the surface of the planet and beams back photos before they are placed online for anyone to view.
In separate images taken by the rover, Mr Waring claimed to find more evidence of an ancient civilisation - a sarcophagus.
He wrote today: "I also found a funeral sarcophagus in the shape of a person.
"It has similarities to ancient Egyptian sarcophaguses found."
Mr Waring also claimed to find ruined buildings.
With so much evidence apparently just sitting on the surface of Mars, why have we heard nothing from NASA?
Mr Waring, like many fellow conspiracy theorists, has his own idea why.
He added: "You know NASA. They want to keep it quiet so Russia and China will not begin to compete with them to make colonies on Mars."
NASA has a different response.
Although it will not comment on individual claims, NASA says there is no evidence of even the simplest forms of life having existed on Mars.
The so-called discoveries of ancient structures on Mars, it says, are simply the effects of pareidolia coupled with imagination and wishful thinking.
Pareidolia is when the brain tricks the eyes into seeing familiar objects or shapes, such as animals or faces in textures or patterns, such as clouds or the surface of a rock.

pulses of radio energy more powerful than 10,000 suns picked up by astronomers have now been linked to a dwarf galaxy discovered more than three billion light years away.
Radio waves detect Aliens
Fast Radio Burst (FRB) are highly energetic but very short-lived bursts of radio waves lasting no more than a millisecond.
The flickers of light, which were first discovered in 2007, last for a fraction of a second but during that time release more energy that the sun will radiate in 10,000 years.
So far 17 more FRBs have been identified - and scientists estimate one of these bursts occurs somewhere in the sky every 10 second.
But a recent study has been able to locate one of the bursts to within a dwarf galaxy billions of light years away - in what could be a sign of alien life.
Radio waves detected
So far 17 more FRBs have been identified
First spotted in 2012 by astronomers at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, the bright, flickering light has recurred repeatedly over the last four years.
And scientists can now reveal its exact position in the sky after honing in on the location following six months of studying the bursts.
Dr Shriharsh Tendulkar, a member of the team from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, said: "Before we knew the distance to any FRBs, several proposed explanations for their origins said they could be coming from within or near our own Milky Way galaxy.
“We now have ruled out those explanations, at least for this FRB."
Using the Very Large Array (VLA), a multi-antenna radio telescope operated by the US National Science Foundation, they were able to pinpoint exactly where FRB 121102 was coming from.
And the spot happened to coincide with that of a faint dwarf galaxy more than three billion light years from Earth.
Further investigations revealed the two emission sources could not be more than 100 light years apart, and are likely to come from the same source.
Dr Benito Marcote, from the Joint Institute for Very Long Baseline Interferometry in Dwingeloo, the Netherlands, said: "We think that the bursts and the continuous source are likely to be either the same object or that they are somehow physically associated with each other."
But what exactly produced the burst remains unknown.
Experts suggest it could have been caused by a super-dense neutron star or possibly a "magnetar", a neutron star with a very powerful magnetic field.

But it has also been suggested the source could be jets of material shooting out from the rim of a supermassive black hole.
Co-author Dr Shami Chatterjee, from Cornell University in the US, said: "Finding the host galaxy of this FRB, and its distance, is a big step forward, but we still have much more to do before we fully understand what these things are."
The research was presented at the American Astronomical Society's annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas.
